Ana Celia de Armas Caso was born on April 30, 1988, in Havana, Cuba. She was raised in the little town of Santa Cruz del Norte. Her paternal grandparents moved to Cuba from Spain to start a new life. Ramón worked at a bank, as a teacher, as the principal of a school, and as the deputy mayor of a municipality, among other things. He was a philosophy student at a university in the Soviet Union.
Ana, her mother, worked in the human resources department of the Ministry of Education. Javier, De Armas’s older brother, is a New York-based photographer. He was questioned by Cuban authorities in 2020 because he was critical of Decree 349 and had contacts with artists under surveillance by the government.
